Norval Morrisseau was an Ojibwa living like a nomad on the northwest shores of Lake Superior. Morrisseau started to paint in 1959. He is considered to be the first Native to break the tribal rules of setting down Native Legend in picture form for the white man to see and the first Native to actually draw these legends and design representative shapes to illustrate his folklore. Norval Morrisseau is credited with being the founder of the Woodland Indian Art Movement.
