Our Grandmother's Words: Traditional Stories for Nurturing

Our Grandmother's Words: Traditional Stories for Nurturing

Our Grandmothers' Words: Traditional Stories for Nurturing is a 64-page resource offering readers guidance about Mi’kmaq traditional wisdom for pregnancy and birth. Traditional child raising practices recognize that you begin to raise a child from the moment you know you are pregnant. This book shares the Grandmother’s understandings for pregnancy and birth as well as some traditional stories that are used to help guide and nurture parents and children as they grow together. This book is developed by Prune Harris from the words and wisdom of four Grandmothers from the Mi’kmaw Nation of Eskasoni. They are Diana Denny, Murdena Marshall, Susie Marshall and Veronica (Flo) Young. The book is built around Sali’j, a young Mi’kmaw woman who, when she learns she is pregnant seeks guidance from her mother, grandmother and godmother. As is the Mi’kmaw way, she is encouraged and instructed little by little, story by story. The bilingual nature of the presentation with Mi'kmaq and English on opposite pages allows readers to appreciate a living Indigenous language. Colourful paintings by Gerald Goade supports the text. The final two-page spread offers readers a chart outlining the Mi'kmaw Sacred Teachings: 7 stages of life with the 7 gifts. The 7 gifts are Love, Honesty, Humility, Respect, Truth, Patience, and Wisdom. Highly recommended.
